La Liga legends Santi Carzola and Karim Benzema proved their worth during the 2019/20 campaign.

Benzema was the catalyst to Real Madrid clinching the La Liga title and they ended their rivals FC Barcelona's dominance, who had won two successive league trophies.

Widely considered one of the best strikers in Real's history, Benzema moved up on the club's all-time goalscorer list when netted a first-half brace in a 4-0 win at Eibar in November 2019.

The former France international overtook Ferenc Puskas as the club's 6th all-time goalscorer in La Liga with 157 goals from 323 appearances.

A creative, skillful, quick, and prolific forward, Benzema made his 500th appearance for Real Madrid in a 2-0 home win over Barcelona in El Clasico in March 2020.

This saw the former Olympique Lyonnais marksman becoming the fourteenth player in the club's history to achieve this milestone.

His stats in La Liga were impressive too as he played an instrumental role in helping the Whites clinch a record-extending 34th La Liga title.

Benzema, 33, created and scored goals for Zinedine Zidane's side having hit the back of the 21 times and only FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi had more goals with 25.

The Lyon-born player also registered eight assists during the campaign and only Messi, Real Sociedad star Mikel Oyarzabal and Villareal legend Santi Carzola had more.

Meanwhile, the recent campaign saw Carzola rediscover his old form and he played an integral role in helping Villarreal qualify for next season's UEFA Europa League group stage.

The experienced playmaker became the midfielder with the most goals in Villarreal's history with 46 goals when he scored his team's second in a 5-1 thrashing of Real Betis in September 2019.

The record was previously held by club icon Juan Roman Riquelme and Carzola went on to finish the season with 57 goals having had three stints with the Yellow Submarine.

Cazorla, 35, played his final game for Villarreal which was a 4-0 league win over Eibar in July 2020 and he assisted the opening goal, which was scored by Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa.

The Spain international was given a guard of honour by teammates and opponents as he played his final match for his boyhood club. He has joined Qatari giants Al Sadd.

Carzola registered eight assists in La Liga and only Messi and Oyarzabal had more and he was Villarreal's second-highest goalscorer in the competition with 11 goals.

“My opinion of Santi cannot be any higher," Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta paid tribute to Carzola after he played his last game for Villarreal against Eibar.

"Personally, first, with the type of person he is and what he brings to that dressing room, but then also as a player for what he did throughout his career."
