Hamilton looks to equal Schumacher’s record

019 Formula 1 season Round 17

Japanese Grand Prix

Suzuka International Racing Course, Suzuka, Japan
Sunday 13 October 2019

Lewis Hamilton will look to equal Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of six Japanese Grand Prix wins when Round 17 of the 2019 Formula 1 season rolls into the Suzuka International Racing Course on Sunday 13 October.

Hamilton has five Japanese GP victories under his belt, including four of the last five years (the only exception was then Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg in 2016), with the ‘Silver Arrows’ enjoying huge dominance at Suzuka in the hybrid era.

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas

Hamilton comes into this year’s race having won the previous round in Sochi, Russia. The British driver took full advantage of slip-ups from the faster Ferraris to claim his ninth victory of the season and extend his lead in the Drivers’ Championship to 73 points over teammate Valtteri Bottas (who was second in Sochi).

Bottas has now gone 12 races without a win and is seemingly more in a battle to retain second place on the log ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc rather than challenging Hamilton for the title.

Mercedes have won the last five Japanese Grands Prix

Yet the recent speed of the Ferraris suggests that this will be a tough battle for Mercedes. The sweeping speed of Suzuka is not dissimilar to recent races in Belgium and Italy, where the Scuderia was dominant.
